My reaction was the same as the first comment. Day shift and night shift. Really would expect that to be 1 and 2 though, not D or N.
The fact that there's an arrow strongly suggests to me that it's just a tracking mechanism for who/when it was cast, and not terribly important.

My guess is that it means Day shift or Night shift made the engine block . When the freeze plugs fall out you can blame the day crew, but it was actually the night crew :P

I think your guess is correct. Some other manufacturers used similar system.
Chrysler even used a clock to be more accurate.

If it is really day and night, they should push themselves harder! Get three 8-hour shifts out the factory. Don’t let the machines go idle!
